In Nepal, gold and silver are talked about in tola, aana and lal, while shop scales show grams. This page helps you move between them. It also shows how to change tola into kilograms and milligrams, and how to read a Nepali jewellery bill. For the full background of the unit, see our primary bullion conversion reference.
Tola Weight Standard in Nepal
Gold and silver in Nepal are priced per tola. The Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers' Association (FENEGOSIDA) is the group that sets the daily benchmark prices, and its rates are shown per tola and per 10 grams. Tola-size gold coins are also still minted in Nepal.
This page uses Company Tola, the 11.6638 g convention used for its charts. It should not be confused with Mohar Tola, a distinct 11.0806 g unit listed separately in Nepal's statutory weights schedule. Always check the named unit on a historical record, invoice or valuation.
Rounding Company Tola to 11.664 g changes only the displayed precision. Mohar Tola is not a rounding difference: use its own 11.0806 g factor only where that named unit is explicitly stated. See the statutory-unit explanation.
How to Convert Tola to Grams in Nepal
- 1Write down the weight in tola. If you have aana or lal, change them to tola first (see the section below).
- 2Multiply by 11.6638.
- 3Round to two or three decimal places.
Examples
To go the other way, divide the grams by 11.6638. A 20 g chain is 20 ÷ 11.6638 = 1.7147 tola.
Tola, Aana and Lal: Nepal's Gold Units
Nepali jewellers use two smaller units for rings, earrings and other light pieces.
| Unit | Relation | Grams |
|---|---|---|
| 1 tola | 16 aana, or 100 lal | 11.6638 g |
| 1 aana | 1/16 tola, or 6.25 lal | 0.7290 g |
| 1 lal | 1/100 tola | 0.1166 g |
To read a weight such as "2 tola 5 aana", change the aana into a fraction of a tola. 5 aana is 5 ÷ 16 = 0.3125 tola, so the weight is 2.3125 tola, which is 26.9725 g. To change grams back, work from the biggest unit down. A 20 g piece is about 1 tola and 11 aana.
A Word of Caution
A few websites say a tola has 64 lal or 160 lal. Nepali news reports and most Nepali gold sites use 100 lal, and this page does too. If a bill shows lal, ask the shop which count it uses.

Tola to Kilogram and Tola to Milligram
Tola is a unit of mass, so it also converts into the other metric units.
Examples
- 5 tola: 58.319 g = 0.058319 kg = 58,319 mg
- 25 tola: 0.2916 kg
- 1 lal: 116.64 mg
- 1 aana: 728.99 mg
Going the other way, 1 kg is about 85.7353 tola. Nepali news reports write this as roughly 85 tola and 73 lal. Our kilogram and milligram pages have the full tables.
Reading a Jewellery Bill in Nepal
Nepali bills often mix local words with grams. These are the ones to know:
Hallmarked or fine gold, usually described as 24K.
The gold used for most jewellery, usually described as 22K.
Making charges.
Wastage.
Both kinds of gold weigh the same per tola. Only the price per tola is different.
Follow these steps when you check a bill:
- 1Ask for the net weight in grams and in tola, aana and lal.
- 2Convert one into the other and see if they match. For example, "3 tola 10 aana" is 3.625 tola, which is 42.2813 g. If the bill says 41.5 g, ask the shop to explain the 0.78 g gap.
- 3Check that jyala and jarti are written as separate lines, and whether jarti is a percentage or extra weight.
- 4Ask for stone weight to be listed apart from the gold weight.
- 5FENEGOSIDA rates come per tola and per 10 grams. Change your weight into the same unit as the rate before you compare shops.
